Yoga Teacher

Emily began her yoga practice in Auburn, Alabama, and completed her 200-hr YTT with Peach Friedman at Yogafly Studio in 2015. In 2017, she moved to Athens, Georgia, to complete her master’s degree in nutrition and finish up her dietetic internship. There, she fell in love with Shakti Power Yoga - Athens and completed the Baptiste Yoga Institute’s Level 1 training program. After finishing school, Emily stuck around in Athens and taught yoga and managed Shakti’s social media and community connections full-time. During this time, she completed her 300-hr training with Susanna Barkataki. She has also completed over 100 hours of training with Noah Mazé and attended various modules on hands-on assisting, anatomy, philosophy, Sanskrit, and yogic history. Emily is an ERYT-500 and currently teaches in-person & online.

Beginner’s Mind Yoga School

300-hr Yoga Teacher Training - Yoga Alliance Certified

The apprenticeship-style 300hr yoga teacher training is a one-on-one training between the apprentice and Emily Unwin, the lead trainer, Maggie Scruggs, co-facilitator, and guest teachers over the course of 10 to 16 months. Two apprentices are accepted per year.

The apprenticeship mixes weekly one-on-one meetings with self-guided learning dependent on your specific interests and Yoga Alliance requirements. Examples of topics covered: yoga philosophy (Samkhya and Tantric philosophies), anatomy, “advanced” asana, sequencing techniques, mythology stories, study of ancient texts, meditation, pranayama, appropriation versus appreciation, Sanskrit, modifications and prop usage, energy work, astrology, music, cueing, leadership development, yoga as service and action. Weekly meetings can be structured as lessons, book club, feedback sessions, asana practice, practice teaching, inquiry sessions, discussions, and assignments. Expect these weekly meetings alongside two immersion-style weekends over the course of the training.

An apprenticeship model is different than the more popularized RYT-300 large group-style training in that it is more flexible, more personalized, and is solely held between the trainers and apprentice with options for connecting to other apprentices in community-based and immersion-style ways. This model is perfect for people who prefer self-study, individualized teachings, and have a specific niche of interest that they want guidance and growth in.

Cost: 4,500 USD (3,500 GDP) - This training offers payment plans and a build-your-own method of scheduling (both in-person [for those located in Edinburgh] and/or online).
